Why we are excited by Print On Demand (POD)

Writing a book has always been hard!.  It takes focus, time, energy. Many would-be authors labor for years but never get published.  Unfortunately, writing the book is only a small part of the process.  Countless worthy manuscripts are stillborn because their author lacked the skill, money, or time to publish and promote them.  Print On Demand changes the Write-Publish-Promote equation in several fundamental ways.

  • You don't have to spend money having books printed until after they have sold!
  • Your book can be available for sale online within 24 hours of sending it to the POD publisher.
  • You don't have to store, package, and ship the books yourself.
  • You can keep up-front costs to a minimum until you know for sure your book is selling well enough to justify them.
  • You will never have to sell a book you know has errors because you can edit your book as soon as you find a mistake.  All books printed after that time will have been corrected.

Our Personal Print On Demand ( POD ) Adventure

It took an internet marketing video to turn on the POD light bulb for us.  I had heard about it some time ago and even created an account at CreateSpace.  However, I didn't do anything with it until I received a video where the author showed how he could have a book ready for sale on Amazon in less than fifteen minutes.

As anyone who has ever written their own book knows, this is obviously impossible.  And, in fact, he did it by using software that downloaded some articles from one of the PLR (Public Label Rights) directories.  I'm not interested in that approach, so any books I publish will take longer.  However, the fact remains the rest of the publishing process went very quickly and required only a minimal technical skills.

We build websites for antiques & collectibles projects and the ability to add a real book to our products looks very attractive.  Give the lack of upfront cost and the potential sales it's obvious we should give POD a serious try.  This website is where we will be recording our experiences.

If we feel our articles are strong enough we might even turn them into a book.
